Postal workers have been keeping us connected through Covid-19. Yet right now the future of our postal services is in danger.

The European Commission is reviewing the EU postal regulations that will determine the future of post in Europe. In the past, this has resulted in liberalization and deregulation for one of the most reliable institutions in our societies which provides good jobs for hundreds-of-thousands of workers across the continent.

Join UNI Europa Post & Logistics and CESI trade unions’ in calling on the EU to save our post!

There is a lot at stake as the Postal Services Directive goes under revision. It could result in increased liberalisation and more deregulation, leading to:

  • A cut in the frequency of postal deliveries
  • Longer delivery times
  • Fewer post offices
  • An increase in the price of mail
  • A drop in the quality of the postal service
  • The end of universal service obligation that guarantees the right of all European citizens to receive letters and parcels five times a week.

Why say no to more liberalisation and deregulation?

It has already devastated postal services across Europe. The Postal Services Directive liberalised the postal market in Europe. It was supposed to bring about higher quality, greater efficiency, lower prices, and more and better jobs. But these benefits never materialized.

In reality, most companies have cut costs by downsizing or outsourcing the postal network leading to hundreds of thousands of job losses and poorer working conditions. Post offices have been closed and transferred into access points at petrol stations or supermarkets with limited services.

The public spends more time and travels farther to access postal services because there are fewer post offices and fewer letterboxes. Multiple parcel service providers deliver to the same streets on the same day, clogging up roads and polluting the environment.

Liberalisation has jeopardized the sustainable financing of the universal service obligation, and the very mission of postal services. Postal liberalisation has failed postal workers and European citizens.

We need a new game plan. Join UNI Europa Post & Logistics and CESI, with over a million postal and logistics workers across Europe, in calling on the EU to save our post by:

  • Investing in the future of post.
  • Building on the existing universal service obligation to reflect parcel growth.
  • Including social and environmental standards in minimum standards.
  • Guaranteeing a sustainable financing of the universal service obligation.
  • Upholding the minimum universal service obligation requirements.

I join my voice to the call for the European Union to save our post!

We’ve seen how postal workers have been keeping us connected through Covid-19, now is not the time to push cuts on them. Instead, we need the EU to save our post by:
• Investing in the future of post.
• Building on the existing universal service obligation to reflect parcel growth.
• Including social and environmental standards in minimum standards.
• Guaranteeing a sustainable financing of the universal service obligation.
• Upholding the minimum universal service obligation requirements.

It is time to stop the drive towards liberalization at the expense of working people. The European Union has a vital role to play. It is time to step up to that responsibility.
